re. I learn something from every new canvas as in this oil painting.

I hope to bring interest over realism...as I have often felt that photography fills that niche in the art world. I hope that the smell of fresh baked loaves are here, and not the life-like apprearences of the loaves. 16x20 canvas

The "Almond Branch" is a take off on the same topic by the famous Van Gogh. It was an exercise to understand his technique for the formation of the flower petals. The point of reference is different, but was an educational piece to understand technique. 16x20 canvas
Athena...in New York The idea of a "deity" from wherever and whenever...comes into modern times to see the transformation and evolution of society, is a great idea for a story...and in this case, is presented as a oil painting. For even a Goddess, it would be overwhelming to see the modern inventions, the buildings, and people amassed into a metropolis as was never dreamed by ancient mankind.

The idea is not new...but was new in my realm of painting topics, as I always seek something to bait the imagination and a challenge to both skill and communication. Perhaps this is why my subject matter varies so greatly...as I am in constant search for an off-beat topic or presentation that might be of interest.

Here, Athena is pondering and shocked...at a world full of noise and incomprehensible things that even for a Goddess, are difficult to assimilate. Insecurity and and wonder compete to control her emotions. Her cherub companions attempt to soothe her troubled spirit...... 24x30 canvas

The "Banjo Man"....the artist is a banjo player and once a fair bluegrass player himself. The banjo man is a person from memories of a man in the little town of Chandler Arizona.

Sitting outside his old house, he would play in the coolness of the outdoors in the evening....strumming tunes on the old open-back 5-string of questionable origin. His fingers performed melodic magic that can be most appreciated by another fan of this demanding art. 22x30 canvas

BB King Mr. King is the guitarist's guitarist. He also, like a very select few modern musicians, has a unique quality that cries out to be photographed, and in my case, painted. This piece, I coupled in closely with my "industrial series"...uses light and color to create a mood.

Here, BB is at his place of work, at a club where the lights are subtle, and he is ready to play. It is a "happy" painting, depicting a man who loves his profession, and loves to perform. This was a pure joy to paint. The ever-present "Lucille" is ready to entertain all who will listen. 36x36 canvas

The "Blackhawk Ranch" is a plein-aire piece, painted on the spot in the hills not far from my home in Alamo. Being raised in the country, the West and the open spaces still a major part of my painting topics. The morining haze is something unusual to an Arizonan...but makes interesting perspective to most scenes in the Mt. Diablo area.

I have resisted painted the mouontain itself, as I feel it has been overdone...from almost angle, and is second only to the "Lone Cypress" near Carmel as on over-done topic. There are hundreds of other topics and scenes to be done without being repetitive, so I always seek something new and different. 16x20 canvas

"Bread Loaves"....a study with a single color, (Raw Sienna)...dilluted only with white and oil/varnish. This still-life study was done as an exercise, as many pieces that I have weer and whenever...comes into modern times to see the transformation and evolution of society, is a great idea for a story...and in this case, is presented as a oil painting. For even a Goddess, it would be overwhelming to see the modern inventions, the buildings, and people amassed into a metropolis as was never dreamed by ancient mankind.

The painting, "Building the Gate", was done to depict the hearty men laboring to complete this bridge. It is an oil on canvass illustrating work done circa 1930. The dimensions are 48 by 36 inches. The frame is a minimal redwood with gold trim. This painting is done by Walter S. Krane, an accomplished California artist who specializes in paintings of involving the heavy labor of the industrial revolution. His artistic creations are acclaimed and highly prized.

Vital Bridge Statistics: Location: San Francisco and Sausalito, California, USA. Completion Date: 1937. Cost: $27 million. Length: 8,981 feet. Type: Suspension. Longest Single Span: 4,200 feet. Engineer(s): Joseph B. Strauss. Today, some call it the "most spectacular bridge in the world." But a century ago, building the Golden Gate Bridge seemed like an impossible task. Any bridge in this location would have to withstand brutal winds, tide, and fog. It would also sit less than eight miles from the epicenter of the most catastrophic earthquake in U.S. history. 36x48 canvas

"Charlie Christian" was probably the best, innovative, and unquestionably the patriarch of Jazz Guitar. In his 24 short years on earth he made his mark with the Benny Goodman group from 1938 to 1942. I hope to capture his intensity and sytlish persona on this canvas. In the background, Gene Krupa, drummer extraordinaire, keeps time to a swing beat. 24x30 canvas

"Chinatown"

This little abstract has Chinatown written all over it. Color, light, and activity are all there. At night, this part of San Francisco is reborn into a totally new place. Chinese New Years adds to the appeal, and revellers line the streets and back alleys alike.

Coffee Break

Working at low wages, the fry cook spends his day frying burgers and tossing pancakes. He gets a break and for a little while, sits in the cool air in the alley behind the restaurant, having a smoke and a cup of doctored coffee...maybe contemplating what he'll do after work later tonight.

I wanted to depict the inner city feeling so many of us live, tough but not desperate....wise, but not yet cynical. Working people have a sameness and kinship that I hoped to capture when painting this piece. The pauses in life give us a chance to reflect on what is going on around us.

Coffee at the Plant

Part of my "industrial" series. "Red" and "Arnie" are having their morning coffee break, discussing some topic...maybe fishing or sports. Yep, they are blue collar workers, the backbone of our ecomony.

They represent a composite of scores of men I came to know in my years as an engineer. oaves. 16x20 canvas

Coffee at the Plant

I only tried to depict them as they are, were, or might be. I have always been worried that this topic seldom gets any attention in art or otherwise. The "no glamour" jobs where guys take bologna sandwiches and a thermos to work every day are never seen in the movies or tv.

It is a moment in time worth recording, saving to show how things were. With the advent of the computer age, this scene seems even more distant and obscure.

The Pima Native American Group resides in Arizona. I had pictures of many members of these people, and had an idea of how I wanted a portrait to look. Inspiration took over, and this is the result.

The face is Emmett White, who has been my friend since 1948…and who served with me in the United States Marine Corps. We are still in touch, and after this is a close resemblance of him in my memory…as he was recovering from a stroke. He resides on the reservation near Sacaton, Arids, tide, and fog. It would also sit less than eight miles from the epicenter of the most catastrophic earthquake in U.S. history. 36x48 canvas

zona.

The blanket is an “optional” feature, as the Pima are a desert tribe, and do not have much need for this item. He is also not as tired looking, and has recovered well, but the painting is a reminder to me that Life is fragile.

Dusk

Sunset...dusk, it is the magical time of day. Birds return to their perches, animals recline in their burrows and forest hideways, and quiet envelopes the setting sun. There, in a forest glen, we see the last vestiges of a day spent, retiring on it's road to darkness.

I wanted to depict this in the simplest way possible...with as strong a statement and without glamour. In doing so, it (to me) became glamorous on it's own. The contrast of light and dark, and the sun battling the shadows and silouettes of the trees make this a bolder statement that I had intended. A fluid and dimensional technique made this possible.

The basic, simple presentation conveys the quiet, serenity of the glade. The water reflects and re-states the premise. The sky promises a clear night, and a new and glorious morning.
